Although great strides have been made in preventing tooth decay with the advent of fluoridated water, tooth loss due to gum or “periodontal” disease is still very common.
During your comprehensive new patient examination visit, we will do a thorough screening for periodontal (gum) disease closely checking your tissue by exam and x-rays. We'll discuss the various factors associated with gum disease, and will outline a customized treatment plan to help you achieve healthy periodontal tissues.
We have many nonsurgical treatment options that provide remarkable results. Our hygienist will demonstrate techniques for removing plaque from all surfaces of the patient's teeth. State-of-the art ultrasonic tools can gently & effectively remove heavy buildup with little or no annoying "scraping".
Most patients require regular professional prophylaxis or cleanings every six months. However, if it has been a long time or your body builds more tartar or "calculus" than most, more frequent, multiple appointments and other type procedures may be required to return your tissue to a healthy condition. For those treatments, or patients with extremely sensitive gums, it might be necessary to numb you for the treatment needed. All of our hygienists are licensed by the state of South Carolina to administer local anesthesia -insuring your cleaning procedures will always be comfortable no matter how in depth they are.
After treatment with the hygienist, on every subsequent visit we will re-evaluate your condition. If your condition does not improve, surgery may be required. We'll work closely with a periodontal specialist to make this process as smooth and comfortable as possible.
